Let Them. Let Me. A Lesson in Boundaries, Business, and Bravery

It breaks your heart when people steal from you, especially those you once wholeheartedly supported. There is a way to stand tall and move forward. Read more below.

Recently, I had a moment that brought up all the old feelings creatives know too well—frustration, disbelief, and a twinge of heartbreak. A former subcontractor I once worked closely with—someone I supported, collaborated with, and cheered on—was using my photography to promote her own branding services. My images. My creative vision. No credit. No permission.

If you’re a creative, an entrepreneur, or anyone who has poured their heart into building something meaningful, you understand how deeply this stings. But instead of reacting in anger, I paused. I took a breath. And I remembered a lesson I’ve been learning in real time from Mel Robbins' book, Let Them.

“If they want to copy you, let them. If they want to misrepresent your work, let them.”

At first, those words felt impossible. I was the one who had shown up. I had done the work. I had created every image with intention. How could I just… let them?

But then, Mel gives us the next part of the equation:

"Let Me."

Let ME speak up. Let ME stand in my worth. Let ME protect what I’ve built with integrity.

So, I wrote a kind but firm email asking her to remove the images immediately. I cited the copyright law that protects photographers. I did it with grace, but I did not waver.

This experience reminded me why boundaries are important—not just in business but in every part of life. Boundaries are not about pushing people away. They are about honoring yourself. They are an invitation for others to meet you with respect.

To all the women, artists, entrepreneurs, and dreamers reading this: You do not have to shrink, stay silent, or smile through disrespect. You can stand tall. You can set boundaries. And you can still do it with kindness.

Let them do what they do. And then... Let you rise.

With fire, grace, and deep appreciation for this journey,

Kim Brundage Award-Winning Brand Photographer
