Why Emotion Always Wins in Branding, Photography, and Storytelling

I made sure to give ‘negative space’ for my client, Amy Westbrook, so she can add customized text to her banner hero image.

When was the last time a commercial brought tears to your eyes? For me, it was a recent Pampers ad. Instead of showing how much a diaper holds, it tapped into the heart of parenthood — the sleepless nights, the tender giggles, the overwhelming love.

That’s the power of emotion. People don’t connect with features; they connect with feelings.

The same principle applies to branding photography.

The Transformational Process Behind Empowering Headshots

When I recently photographed the incredible women of the eWomen Network in Denver, I witnessed a pattern I’ve seen hundreds of times before. At first, there’s nervous laughter and a touch of hesitation. But as we move through my Signature Empowerment Process — wardrobe styling, camera-ready hair and makeup, guided posing — something shifts.

Confidence begins to bloom. Smiles become effortless. Shoulders relax.

By the time we finish, my clients aren’t just walking away with updated headshots; they're also walking away with a new sense of confidence. They’re walking away with a new way of seeing themselves — radiant, powerful, and proud.

That’s why I believe branding photography isn’t about snapping a flattering picture. It’s about transformation.

Choose a Photographer Who Guides You

Not all photographers approach headshots the same way. Some will ask you to show up, smile at the camera, and deliver a file at the end. However, empowering photography requires a much more profound process.

That’s why I created my Signature Empowerment Process — a high-touch, transformational journey designed to help you feel fully prepared and confident before you even step in front of the camera.

Here’s what my clients experience:

  • Personalized Creative Brief: Together, we map out your brand personality, visual goals, and the message you want your photos to convey. You don’t have to guess what works — you’ll know exactly what we’re creating.

  • Wardrobe Styling Support: Choosing what to wear can be stressful. I offer professional styling guidance from a wardrobe stylist, color palette advice, and accessories so you look both authentic and aligned with your brand.

  • Camera-Ready Makeup & Hair: Every session includes access to trusted professionals who ensure you look your best while still feeling like yourself.

  • Posing and Presence Coaching: During your session, I guide you through natural, flattering poses that highlight your personality — no stiff smiles or awkward angles.

  • Curation & Delivery: You’ll receive a polished gallery of images, plus additional retouching on your favorites, so you walk away with photos you’re proud to share everywhere.

I used the newly renovated lobby of the Hilton Garden Hotel. I asked each of my clients how they intended to use their images and then customized each person’s headshot accordingly.

New Tips for Preparing for a Powerful Headshot Session

If you’re considering new brand photos, here are a few tips to get the most out of the experience:

  1. Think Beyond the Profile Pic
A headshot is essential, but your brand deserves more — action shots, detail images, and hero portraits that tell the whole story of your business.

  2. Use Emotion as Your Guide
Instead of worrying about perfection, ask yourself: How do I want my clients to feel when they see my photo? Empowered? Approachable? Inspirational? That clarity shapes everything.

  3. Align Your Look With Your Brand Colors
Incorporate wardrobe pieces that reflect your brand palette. It creates subconscious recognition across your website, social media, and marketing.

  4. Relax Into the Process
Transformation happens when you let go of overthinking. Trust the process, breathe, and allow your authentic self to shine through.

I love creating at three different poses/locations, but the one pose that rises to everyone’s favorite is a slight lean on the wall. It feels so awkward, but it translates powerfully.

Who I Work With

Entrepreneurs. Speakers. Executives. Thought-leaders.
Women who are ready to step fully into their visibility.

If you’ve been waiting for photos that finally feel like you, this is your moment.

I know all the other 5 star reviews should have given it away...but working with Kim really is a 5 star experience! I have done headshots with many photographers, but Kim’s attention to detail really stands out. She gives you plenty of direction and ensures every detail of your outfit looks great. I appreciated the homework she did ahead of time to research our venue and make sure she was getting good shots that I can work into my marketing materials. On a side note, her lighting equipment allowed her to shoot in all areas and she secured a makeup artist to hair and makeup touch-ups. She’s a real pro and you can’t go wrong with Kim!

Upcoming Opportunity: Richmond Headshot Party

✨ On Sunday, November 2nd, I’ll be bringing this empowering process home to Richmond for a Headshot Party.

These sessions are fun, and deeply impactful. You’ll walk away with images that make you say, “Yes, that’s me. That’s how I want the world to see me.”

Final Thought

Whether it’s a commercial about diapers or a photograph that finally captures your confidence, the truth is the same: emotion always wins.

Your brand deserves photos that don’t just show your face, but reveal your unique story.
